Recycling Made Simpler

By March 2025, all non-household municipal premises in England must implement separate food waste and recycling collections.

Discover how we can help you below.

Who will Simpler Recycling affect?

Everyone in England will be affected by Simpler Recycling, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Businesses with 10 employees or more

MARCH 2025

Businesses with 10 employees or more: Must separate plastic, paper and card, glass, metals (cans, tins, and foil), and food waste from general waste, saving valuable resources from going to waste.

Local authorities

MARCH 2026

Required to comply with the new Simpler Recycling reforms for waste collected from households, providing more consistent recycling and waste collection services, including weekly food waste collections.

Businesses with fewer than 10 employees

MARCH 2027

Must separate plastic, paper and card, glass, metals (cans, tins, and foil), and food waste from general waste, saving valuable resources from going to waste. (This remains subject to legislative confirmation).

What does this mean?

By the 31st of March 2025, your business must segregate the following materials into appropriate containers to enable the recycling of valuable resources.
Dry Mixed Recycling
Paper and cardboard, cartons, metal (cans, tins, and foil), glass, plastic.
Food Waste
All food intended for human or household pet consumption and biodegradable material resulting from the processing or preparation of food (bones, eggshells, fruit and vegetable skins, tea bags, and coffee grounds).
General Waste
Non-recyclable and non-compostable items, such as contaminated or soiled materials (e.g., used tissues, napkins), hygiene products (e.g., nappies, sanitary items), polystyrene, and contaminated materials like food packaging that cannot be washed.
WEEE Waste
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, including broken or obsolete items such as computers, mobile phones, household appliances, lightbulbs, batteries, and cables.
When you can collect paper and card together with other dry recyclables
You should collect paper and card separately from other dry recyclable waste (plastic, metal, and glass), unless it:

is not ‘technically practicable’
is not ‘economically practicable’
has ‘no significant environmental benefit’

You must prepare a written assessment to explain why one or more of these options apply.
By the 31st of March 2027, recyclable plastic films must be separated also.
Please note that biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging materials are not collected within any of the above categories. Speak to your local account manager for more information on how to recycle these items or place them in your general waste containers
